Teaching Geography, Conflict, and Human Rights Through Photos, Maps, and Narrative:
Co-taught by a veteran ELA educator, veteran geography educator/Instructional Coach, and the
Director of UNI’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education, this workshop employs various
texts (maps, testimonials, photos, traditional narrative, etc.) to enhance teachers’ ability to teach
about geographic aspects of conflict and human rights. The workshop links directly with
geography/social studies and the Common Core E/LA. Specific focus areas in this workshop
include the Rwandan Genocide, Sudan, The Holocaust, and Syria. Each participant receives two
free books.
